"Farewell to Thee" - Following Hawaiian tradition, Sailors honor men killed during the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Naval Air Station Kaneohe, Oahu. The casualties had been buried on 8 December. This ceremony took place sometime during the following months, possibly on Memorial Day, 31 May 1942.

America celebrates Independence Day each year on July 4, commemorating
the day in 1776 when the colonists declared their freedom from British rule.
Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence, which was approved
and signed by members of the Continental Congress of the United States of America.

When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

In these verses of scripture, Joshua is speaking to the whole nation of Israel. In the past, their forefathers had turned away from God; they had practiced idol worship, settled into the sinful lifestyles of other nations, and failed to keep the laws and commandments of the one true God. Today, God speaks to us, America, as a nation: "Whom will you serve?"

Whom did the founding fathers of our nation serve? Did they serve the one true God, the Creator of the universe and everything in it? Did they serve God, the Father, who sent His Son Jesus Christ -the Messiah- into the world to be offered as the ultimate sacrifice, the Lamb of God, slain for all the sins of the world? Did they serve the Lord our God who sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in us, to lead us, to guide us, and to direct our paths? Whom did the founders of the United States of America serve?

How will we respond to God today as a nation?
How will you respond to Him as an individual?
Will you answer His call to serve Him?

As for me and my house,
we will serve the Lord.
