This book relates the personal, first-hand account of World War II memories of my friend and neighbor, M. Gordon Hazard, a depression-era Mississippi boy who financed his college education at Mississippi State by taking on three separate jobs as an employee of the college while he continued his studies in agriculture as a full-time student. He fed the pigs every day, before and after classes, for the Swine Department; he fed the mules for the Agronomy Department; and he put the sheep up at night for the Ag Department. His parents had somehow scraped up enough money to pay for his first semester at the nearby college only to see their son swept off to another continent by the waves of war.
He served in the United States Army—a lieutenant in E Company, 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division—during World War II, and he received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, the European Theater Service Medal with 4 bronze stars representing his four campaigns (Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes), the American Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
After returning home, Hazard resumed his cattle farming for a short time, but he soon went back to school and completed his college education, receiving a B.S. from Mississippi State and a D.V.M. from Auburn University. "Doc" Hazard is now a retired veterinarian who still makes daily drives out to western Clay County, Mississippi, to work on his cattle farm.
Known locally for his splendid storytelling and his sense of humor, he has skillfully mastered the art of transferring those thoughts to pen and paper, or to put it in more modern terms, to keyboard and computer screen. Hazard's book offers a unique perspective of the war and leaves the reader with a deeper knowledge and a broader understanding of this era in America's history than could ever be gained from a history book citing mere historical facts.
"World War II, As I Remember" is a must-read for all! — Marcia G. Phyfer
